Question: What Offices Are Up For Election in 2008 in Travis County?

2008 is a Presidential election year. But there are plenty of other offices up for grabs at the state and county levels. While the actual names on the ballot may change between now and November 4, find out which specific state, district, and county offices, and court seats are up for election in 2008.

President

The entire country votes for a new United States President in November 2008.

U.S. Senator

Texas has two U.S. Senators. Only one is up for election this year.

U.S. Representatives

Thirty-two U.S. Representatives come from Texas. All are up for election. Of those 32, three districts cover Travis County.

Railroad Commissioner

There are three members of the Texas Railroad Commission. One is up for election in 2008.

Texas Supreme Court Justices

The Chief Justice (Place 1) and two members (Place 7, and Place 8) of the Supreme Court are up for election.

There are three members (Place 3, 4, 9) up for election this year.

State Senator

There are 15 State Senators up for election in 2008 throughout Texas but that does not include the two Senate Districts that cover Travis County.

State Representativees

All 150 State Representatives are up for election in 2008, including six Texas Representatives that serve citizens of Travis County and Austin.

State Board of Education

Seven members of the board are up for election but not the members from the two districts that cover Travis County.

Court of Appeals

The 3rd Court of Appeals covers Travis County. The Chief Justice is the only seat up for election in 2008.

District Judges

Of the 17 District Courts covering Travis County, eight of them have a judge up for election in 2008.

District Attorney

After 30 years of service, Travis County DA Ronnie Earle is stepping down. There will be a 2008 election to fill this office.

Sherriff

The office of Travis County Sherriff will be on the 2008 ballot.

County Courts at Law

While other counties will be electing new judges, none of the Travis County Courts at Law judges are up for election this year.

County Commissioners

Two of the four precincts of the Travis County Commissioners Court have commissioners up for election.

Tax Assessor-Collector

In Travis County, the Office of the Tax Assessor-Collector is on the ballot for 2008.

Justices of the Peace

There will be JP elections throughout the state but none of the Justices of the Peace serving Travis County are up for election this year.

Constables

All five precinct constables for Travis County are up for election in 2008.

With nine members serving six year overlapping terms, Austin Community College Board of Trustees Place 1, Place 2, and Place 3 are up for election in the May general election. Place 5 is also up for grabs because the current member is moving.

AISD Board of Trustees

Four of the nine seats on the board of trustees for the Austin Independent School District are up for election in May. Place 2 (Southeast), Place 3 (North), Place 5 (North Central), and Place 8 (at-large) are the places on the ballot.
