Cost of Taxes in Austin

How Much Does the Taxman Take?

From Jacci Howard Bear, for About.com

Texas has no state income tax but there are still other taxes that figure into the cost of living in Austin. Note that the ACCRA does not take taxes into consideration when compiling the ACCRA Cost of Living Index.
  • No State Income Tax
  • Sales Tax: 8.25% as of January 2002
    • State Sales Tax: 6.25% (no sales tax on unprepared food items)
    • Local Sales Tax: 1% City
    • Local Sales Tax: 1% Capital Metro for transportation and roads
  • Property Tax: $1,128 (2002 per capita for Texas)

Actual property taxes vary depending on where you live. Property taxes are based on the value of your property and include city, school, and utility district components.

In 2006 the Texas Legislature initiated some changes to school funding that should result in a cut in property tax rates for some school district jurisdictions over the next year or two. To accomplish these tax cuts there will be new taxes on business and on cigarettes ($1.41 per pack cigarette tax).
